Saint-Étienne tramway extension gets the green light
Following the extension of its tramway system between the Place du Peuple and Chateaucreux railway station in 2006, the Saint-Étienne Métropole urban authority is entrusting Mobility with another major project, with the award of the contract for 4.5 km of overhead contact lines for the extension of the city's third tram line.
The history of the Saint-Étienne tramway goes back a long way... This is the only city in France to have preserved its original tramway, which, unusually, runs on metre-gauge track, in the city centre.
This new 4.5 km stretch, powered via overhead contact lines, will connect Chateaucreux railway station with Avenue Bergson, passing via the Technopôle business district and Geoffroy Guichard stadium, thus improving links between the city and these strategic areas.
The green light for this connection work will be given this spring, with work on the new stretch scheduled for the first half of 2019.
