Lyon T3 tram line: Modifications to serve the football stadium

Aims

Modification and extension of the T3 tram line to serve the “Grand Stade” football stadium.
Objective: transport 15'000 people per hour before and after every match.

Services performed

  • Railway signalling and overhead contact lines on the extension of the T3 tramway. This is the most densely equipped section of tram line ever built, with around 30 train positions along less than 600 m.
  • Development of a complex and integrated solution to ensure that the system of intersection barriers operates smoothly along the length of the line. This high-performance tool improves traffic flow, both on the tram line and on the roads.

Technical Details

  • Development of 28 PLC programs at safety level SIL2, on a Siemens S7-315F PLC.
  • Upgrading of the existing technical management system.
  • Upgrading of existing road intersection control systems.
  • Development of a real-time simulation tool for the entire T3 line to validate and optimise the tram and road traffic flow management system. This system incorporates the field environment, the specifications of the various rolling stock (acceleration, braking, dimensions, etc.), new PLCs, the technical management system, intersection control systems, and existing manoeuvring areas.
  • Replacement of 28 instrumentation and control cabinets along the line, each incorporating a combination of NS1 relays and a safety PLC.
  • Installation of 200 axle counters.
  • Migration of the line under operational conditions with the addition of 28 temporary signalling systems in conjunction with the other sub-systems (shunting areas, road intersections, etc.).
